The Canadian Somali Congress (CSC) is pleased with the turn of events in Mogadishu which is currently experiencing a level of stability that has eluded Somalia for many many years. Tens of thousands of cautiously optimistic internally displaced residents are returning to the city to rebuild their lives. This new sense of hope must not be illusionary but needs to be cemented by urgent assistance from the international community in order to enable Somalia to a stable society with democratic institutions. The internationally community's assistance has so far been largely limited to some humaritarian aid and has been woefully inadequate. Somalis in Somalia have now largely done their part. All segments must continue to work with goodwill for peace, security and development. In Canada, and other countries, where Somali diaspora communities exist, we must work diligently with those who have an interest in the welfare of Somalia to engage our governments and non-governmental organizations to respond to the urgent needs of Somalia. The Canadian Somali Congress has been working diligently with senior government officials of the Canadian government to respond to these urgent needs. We must continue to press the international community to act now and not forfeit this historical opportunity. Any complacency on the part of the international community will result in the risk of allowing the country to return to anarchy. This is something that must not be allowed to happen.
